As I'm sure everyone is aware, this is long, long overdue and many of you figured this was the case, but there will be no posting. This is completely my fault - I got immensely bogged down with real life problems, which is not an excuse, but the reason why I barely turned on my computer most days. I'm incredibly sorry that this declined the way it did, but it was not because of participation or anything like that. Like I said, this is my fault entirely and I wish I had a better explanation than "real life sucks" but I don't.

Anyway, everyone is free to repost their fics at their will. If authors would like, they can either email/PM/comment here with a link to their fic and I can post a table here, as a mini-reveals or something, complete with prompts.

Again, I'm very sorry for the way this turned out.

Happy holidays & New Year,

Hello everyone!

We have reached the 30th of September, and while I have received a small handful of completed fics, the large majority has expressed a need for an extension of sorts.

So there will be one. Fics are now due October 18, 2014!

For those who have turned fics in already, congratulations! Of course, if you want to take the time to go over and make final edits, please do so at your leisure and email us the final version!

And to those still working hard on your fics, good luck!

We'll see you all when posting commences!

Hello everyone!

Just a quick note to let you all know that prompt assignments have been emailed out! If you haven't received an email, please check your junk folder, and if you still don't have it, please let me know in the comments here or an email, and I will have that squared away for you as soon as possible.

But without further delay, may the writing time for the 2014 challenge commence and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Over and out,

With that, sign ups and prompt submissions have been closed and now I bring to you this year's prompt list!

Before we get to the list, there are a few things I would like to reiterate before claims begin:
  • As you're looking over the prompts, please give each prompt a proper thought! While knee-jerk "oh god I can't possibly write that!" reactions are commonplace, the point of the challenge is to do just that -- challenge yourself. So really think about every prompt on the list -- can you make it work? Is there something you can add to it to make it distinctly your flavor? Keep in mind that the prompt is simply just that -- a prompt. Whatever you want to do to make it truly yours is up to you! You have five days to comment -- use them!

  • When commenting with your choices, please list your top five (5) prompt choices. Comments will be screened. Claims will be first come, first serve, but since you won't be able to see what prompts everyone else wants, back-ups are necessary. Again, I will do my absolute best to give everyone their top choices, but I cannot make guarantees.

  • Remember, you cannot claim your own prompt!

  • When leaving your choices, please list the number corresponding to each prompt only, one per line, in order of preference. This is mostly to help me speed up the process of pairing prompts with participants as my eyes will be bleeding numbers, so help a modda out.

  • Additionally, if you would like to take a chance and let fate decide (aka, a random number generator), please comment saying so!

  • Claims will end August 11, noon EST. Prompt confirmation emails will be sent out the evening of the 11th EST. If you have not commented with your top five choices in prompts, one will be randomly assigned to you.
Again, and as per usual, any questions can go in a comment, PM to this account, or an email to the mods!

But enough jibber jabber -- prompts time!

the johnny's & associates alternate universe challenge

Welcome to the first ever challenge ediiton of JE Otherworlds!

I am your fancy man with green hair, Captain Planet, and I am excited to be presenting you the new incarnation of everyone's beloved Otherworlds.

Now, before we get to the meat and potatoes of the entry, there are a few things I'd like to reiterate before we kick things off:
  1. This post is for prompt submissions only. All comments will be screened, so don't worry if you don't see other comments on the post.
  2. Please read the rules/FAQ for the challenge. As this is a whole new system we're working with, there will undoubtedly be many kinks that we'll have to work out, so if there are any questions or confusing matters, please leave a comment on the aforementioned link and I will reply ASAP!
  3. You are only allowed to submit one prompt, so make it count! Prompts are only to be a MAXIMUM of two sentences, should include setting information only, and please do not include any groups, pairings, or main characters in your prompt. Also, please avoid writing out a full summary of the plot -- general rule of thumb is to strip everything away and just stick with the bare bones of the setting, and you should be okay!
  4. Submissions end August 5th, 11:59 PM EST. Prompt claims will be available starting August 6th.

And have at it, folks -- the 2014 special summer matsuri challenge has begun!

Prompt submissions closed! Thank you to everyone signing up this year!

PS: If you're feeling magnanimous and would like to pimp this exchange out to your friends, feel free to copy the code below and toss it about willy-nilly! The more, the merrier!

Hello, and welcome to the rules/FAQ post for the first challenge year of je_otherworlds! As things are changing due to the new nature of Otherworlds, please make sure to read the post in its entirety, although again, most of it may be a refresher. Nevertheless, it's always good to review!

Any other questions can be directed to the mods via a comment to this post, a PM, or an email, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can! Happy AUing!

Hello everyone! Your resident mod of Otherworlds here, with an announcement!

JE Otherworlds will be running this year, but as a challenge rather than a full-fledged exchange. An Otherworlds summer matsuri, if you will!

The decision to change the way the exchange is held was mine alone, and not just based on the user comments in the last post. Actually, based on those comments alone, it would have been difficult but there would have been just enough interest spread to have the cycle run as usual. But in the long run, it wasn't really about who could write what.

In the past few weeks, I have sat down and really thought about a lot of the factors surrounding the slow demise of ficdom for JE fandom. I mean, it was probably inevitable because of a lot of contributing factors - the widespread reach of lots of other social networking sites that has reduced LJ fandom to a very small slice of the pie rather than the bulk of it, like it was a few years ago. Whichever way you look at it, the truth now is that people just aren't writing, for whatever reason. Throw in the stress of having to write something that you hope with all your talents and skill that your recipient likes, and do that to yourself multiple times a year for multiple years and it's really not rocket scientist why participation fell off the way it has. So I thought about what and how fandom would benefit from another exchange and ultimately came to the thought that maybe fandom doesn't need another exchange - fandom just needs a place where people are writing, period.

And so the Otherworlds challenge was born.

What does this mean for Otherworlds?

While Otherworlds will still be the AU ficfest fandom is used to, it will now be a challenge where participants may submit prompts, then claim one off a master list to write as they wish. Groups, pairings, ratings, content - all of that is left to each writer to do as they like with the prompt they choose, taking the stress of having to write for someone off, but still maintaining a bit of a challenge in that now there is a deadline, and your creative boundaries in terms of setting and story are directly tied to the prompts your fellow participants can come up with. There may be a ton of great prompts you want to try and write! There's the possibility that there's absolutely nothing that catches your eye. Either way, Otherworlds will be designed to provide you with as much support as it can in order to see a fic through from start to end.

more details under the cutCollapse )

In a nutshell, that's how the challenge will run this time. I tried really hard to think of everything I needed to and, of course, there may be confusing bits or things I overlooked in general. If there are any questions or concerns, please let me know in the comments of this post! Any feedback on this new reincarnation of Otherworlds would be appreciated!

Hello everyone!

Cutting the Captain Planet schtick for a few moments here, this is your friendly otherworldly mod! As you can see, the timing of which I usually announce a cycle has passed. This isn't to say that there won't be a cycle this year -- there very well may be! -- but first, I want to see if there is interest in the fic-writing side of fandom for this to be a successful and fruitful run of je_otherworlds.

As we all can see, interest in the fic side of fandom has fallen a lot due to many factors, so this is going to be very, very simple -- please reply to this post if you would be interested in writing for another cycle of JEOW. There is no form to fill out, although if you could leave what groups you usually write/are primarily interested in, that would definitely help me exponentially in figuring out if this is a project I want to take on.

Of course, I want the cycle to happen. I love this exchange, I love this genre of fic, and I love that for all three years of the exchange thus far the fic that has come out of this exchange has been some of the best in fandom for years, and that's not just me tooting the exchange but, really, a shout-out to all of you for making it happen. And I have no doubt that I could run it again and the same caliber of writing would come out again! When I say that I am consistently impressed by the exchange, I truly do mean that. But unfortunately, running an agency-wide exchange like this tends to make pairing people as well as finding betas/pinch hits incredibly difficult if there isn't a relatively even amount of interest from the groups represented, nor does it make finding the inevitable pinch hits easy, either.

That being said, I am absolutely for modding and participating in another cycle! So let me hear your thoughts and concerns, and I will take everyone's comments into account as I try to figure out plausibility and potential timeline.

Also, don't be afraid to link this entry out to everyone and anyone! The more input, the better!

Thanks everyone!

Aaaaand the post that you've all been waiting for -- reveals!

I would like to thank argle_fraster, astrangerenters, and basil_ovelby for being the most wonderful trio of pinch hitters ever, as well as all the participants for making it through another year! Pat yourselves on the back -- it is truly deserved! After all, the exchange would cease to exist if it weren't for all of you who took part! If you have yet to comment on your giftfic, it is never too late to do so!

And now, the almighty reveals table for the 2013 cycle of JE Otherworlds!

this is it / here i standCollapse )
22 September 2013 @ 09:06 pm

hello everyone!

due to my day being busier than usual, reveals completely slipped my mind so they will be posted tomorrow!

I apologize for the delay!

- cap'n

15 September 2013 @ 10:32 pm
And that, fair denizens of Earth, concludes posting for the 2013 cycle of JE Otherworlds!

Due to the delay in posting, reveals are tentatively (and more than likely) scheduled to be posted in one week, the 22nd of September!

In the meantime, if you have not read or commented on your fic, now is the chance to do so! Please don't leave your authors hanging, as a lot of work has gone into their fics for you! Even something as simple as a 'thank you' may mean the world to them and ease their worries! In the same vein, please keep comments to fic positive; any negativity, no matter how loftily worded, is still negativity, and you can take that somewhere else.

And that's it! Remember, reveals in a week -- in the meantime, read, comment, and be merry!

Captain Planet, over and out!

Title: Janizu Crossing: A Tale of Murder, Mystery, and Mayoring
Groups/Pairings: Nishikido Ryo/ Masuda Takahisa (if you squint), appearances by the rest of NEWS and assorted other Johnny's.
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Summary: Ryo moves to a new town for a fresh start and musical inspiration. But what he finds there is more than what he's expecting.
Notes: Thanks to my wonderful, wonderful beta and the ever-patient mod for enduring my slowness. I hope you enjoy this, Zoe!

turn over for a new leafCollapse )
15 September 2013 @ 10:13 pm
Title: Chronicles of a Moonless Night
Groups: Heikeha (Sakamoto, Nagano, Inocchi, Joshima, Tatsuya, Taichi)
Pairings: romantic pairings include Taichi/Leader, Tatsuya/Reina, and Inocchi/Asaka (though this is by no means a romance fic); broships include Sakamoto/Nagano, Taichi/Tatsuya, and Sakamoto/Taichi
Rating: R
Warnings: rampant language, excessive, graphic violence, disturbing images, death, religious references, teen sensuality
Summary: And he shall smite the wicked.
Notes: I wrote you a novel. SORRY. But I do hope you enjoy it. It kind of ran away from me and I had a ton of fun writing it. I also made a soundtrack for it! It's not only inspired by the story, but ended up inspiring parts of it itself (this always seems to happen), so I fixed it up all nice and pretty and figured I'd give it to you too. You can download it here. I hope you have as fun reading it as I had writing it! <3

Nagano threw a paper up over the table, slapping the side of Sakamoto's head.Collapse )
